Vocab Words Assignment Monday 8/26/24

Today, we began an assignment in class where we made cards for vocabulary words, that included the words, definition, picture, and an explanation for the picture. I learned the meaning to a few new words including "reverie" meaning a daydream and "sulked" meaning to be mad in silence. I liked this lesson because I feel it give me a way to retain this information better by drawing a picture and explaining it. Today, I'm feeling prepared for the week, and to get through it, until Friday.

Group Presentations on Dickinson Poem Friday 8/23/24

Today we presented our assigned presentations based on the Emily Dickinson poem we read in class about being "somebody" or "nobody" and self-esteem. Our group was assigned a presentation around self-esteem exploration, and I learned that we can be like the speaker in the poem by finding comfort in being ourselves. I liked that the lesson expounded upon the ideas that were presented in the poem of self-esteem, being true-to-self, and societal expectations. I'm feeling excited because it's Friday, and this is the final class before the weekend.

Emily Dickinson Poem & Self Esteem Explorers Group Project 8/21/24

Today, we reviewed an Emily Dickinson poem titled "I'm Nobody! Who are you?" before starting a group project related to aspects of the poem. I learned that to Dickinson being a "nobody" means to be themself and not forcing themself to conform to society, and that being somebody means the opposite and to be normal and conforming. In this lesson I liked how she flipped somebody and nobody to have the opposite connotation of what I would expect and create a new perspective on those words. I feel good today, and I'm preparing for the SAT this weekend.

"I, Too" Langston Hughes Study Monday 8-19-24

In this class today, we observed and analyzed Langston Hughes' poem "I, Too." In this poem, Hughes touches on key points on race and segregation in America and the future of it from his perspective. This lesson showed me that an American has no particular look, and that the country is a melting pot of diverse Americans. In this lesson I liked comparing his view of the future of race relations to now, and seeing that for the it has become reality for the most part. My day has been decent, but I am tired because I stayed up too late the night before.

Immigration NewsELA Tuesday 8/20/24

In class today we completed an assignment reviewing the current status and future of immigration / immigrants to America. I learned that Asians are soon to become the most common immigrant group over Hispanics by the year 2055. I liked this lesson because it gave me new insight into the immigration demographics in the U.S. that I did not know about beforehand. Throughout the day, I have been studying for a math test on Friday.
